Dispelling myths and reinforcing truths is a fundamental goal of SistaStrong. It is also a fundamental of why SistaStrong was created for Black women seeing that there are myths within our community specifically that hold us back. Many times we believe things about ourselves and others that are not founded in truth. Because we grew up with these beliefs or they are a part of our families, communities or culture does not in any way make them true.
Who told you that you were ugly? Who told you that you were not smart? Who told you that you would never be anything or have anything? Who told you that you can't have good in your life? Who told you that Black women never get along? Who said you have to step on someone to get ahead? Dispell the myths that don't serve you, replace them with truth. As the saying goes, the truth shall what.... set you free.
Dispelling Myths:
Myth:
Black women don’t get along and never will.
Truth:
Black women do and can support one another with knowledge of themselves. The crabs in a bucket mentality, competitive or jealous spirits that live among us fester only through the lack of knowledge of one's self worth and ability is present. If a woman feels good about herself, she can feel good about her Sista. If she feels she is capable of obtaining her desires, she will be happy for another Sista who does so. An advancement for one Black woman is an advancement for all Black women.
Myth:
You are what people have said you are. You can only accomplish what your history, family or community has said you can accomplish.
Truth:
You are who God says you are. Regardless of where you were born, the circumstances of your family, or the status of your economics, you have worth and value. You can go to places you've never dreamed of with vision, support, knowledge, action and faith. You can possess what you determine you can possess.
